Undergraduates wishing to take more than 19 units need an approved petition to do so. The Exceed Maximum Units Petition (Undergraduate) requires the approval of student’s advisor and Chair in the major and the College Dean where the major is housed.
Students should have earned a 3.0 GPA in the previous semester while carrying a significant number of units and a transcript should be attached showing that achievement. Students who have not yet taken courses at SFSU may attach transcripts from elsewhere.
All of the courses the student desires to take in the specified semester must be listed on the petition.
Before submitting the petition for a Dean’s review, make sure that all parts of the petition are completed; that the student, advisor, and Chair have signed; and that an unofficial transcript is attached. A clear statement about the student’s ability to successfully complete the overload is required for approval.
Packets which are otherwise complete, but still needing a Dean’s signature should be submitted to the ARC (Advising Resource Center) in room 112 of the Humanities Building. Appointments will not be given for a Dean’s signature; petitions will be processed within a week of being received.
If there are no issues with a petition, it will be acted upon and forwarded to the Registrar. If there is a problem, the student will be informed within a week by email. It is imperative that students write their email address on the petition clearly.
