Petitions

Most student petitions can be located online via the Registrar's Office. You can consult our Petitions Checklists (below) to learn what is required for each petition.

After your petition has been signed by the designated faculty member and the Department Chair, ask the department staff if s/he will forward your petition or whether you should move it along to the Dean’s level yourself. If you are bringing the petition to the Dean’s office, leave it with the receptionist at CA 251 any time between Monday - Friday, 9am to 5pm.

You need to attach an unofficial transcript to all of the following petitions:

  • Academic Standing
  • Exceed Maximum Units
  • Independent Study (699/899 Special Study)
  • Waiver of College Regulations

There may be other attachments necessary, specific to each form—be sure to read the instructions on each form carefully, so your petition will not be delayed. For example, the Academic Standing petition requires a completed GPA deficit calculator form for undergraduates and graduates.

Appointments will not be given for petitions. Please leave 1 WEEK for the College to process your petition. If there is a problem with your petition at the College office, we will let you know within a week by email—be sure your email address is written very clearly on your petition. If there are no issues with your petition, it will be acted upon and forwarded to the Registrar on your behalf.

The following forms can be processed at the Department level and do not require Dean’s approval:

Academic Standing

Recovering from an Undergraduate Academic Problem

Undergraduate students who maintain a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.0 or higher in their overall GPA and their SFSU GPA are in good academic standing. If either the overall or SFSU cumulative GPA drops below 2.0, a student is placed on probation. Two semesters of a cumulative GPA below 2.0 can lead to the student being disqualified and restricted from taking additional classes at the university until the GPA is improved by enrolling through the College of Extended Learning & International Affairs (CELIA), which is typically more expensive and more difficult to get classes. Undergraduate students who are on academic probation must file an SFSU Undergraduate Academic Standing Petition (ASP). When submitting the ASP to your academic advisor, Chair, and the College Associate Dean, attach a copy of your unofficial transcript and an undergraduate deficit calculator for your current academic work.

Recovering from a Graduate Academic Problem

Graduate students who maintain a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher in their overall GPA and their SFSU GPA are in good academic standing. If either the overall or SFSU cumulative GPA drops below 3.0, a student is placed on probation. Two semesters of a cumulative GPA below 3.0 can lead to the student being disqualified and restricted from taking additional classes at the university period or until the GPA is improved by enrolling through the College of Extended Learning & International Affairs (CELIA), which is typically more expensive and more difficult to get classes. Students who are on academic probation must file a Mandatory Graduate Probation Advising Form. When submitting the petition to your Graduate Coordinator or Department Chair, and the Division of Graduate Studies, attach a copy of your unofficial transcript and a graduate deficit calculator for your current academic work.

Current Semester Withdrawal

Please see the department of the class from which you wish to Withdraw about its particular procedures. The Department will inform you of its procedures for requesting Current Semester Withdrawals. Refer to the Department Requirements regarding paper petitions. Regardless of the department’s particular procedures, the department will enter the Withdrawal request in the University’s online system. The College of Liberal & Creative Arts Dean’s office accepts Current Semester Withdrawals through this online system only—paper petitions will not be accepted at the Dean’s level.

The most important part of your Current Semester Withdrawal request is your justification for the Withdrawal.

Write your reason for the Withdrawal carefully, reflecting a serious and compelling reason beyond your control. Please see the College Withdrawal Policy.

If there is an issue with your Withdrawal justification, you will be informed by a representative from the department of the class from which you wish to Withdraw.
